A groundbreaking meeting of gender management teams from CRUCH universities will take place on August 2nd and 3rd.

The first National Meeting of Gender Leadership Teams of the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities (CRUCH) will bring together more than 120 representatives over two days. The teams will share their experiences, lessons learned, and challenges in the process of developing and implementing gender policies in universities.

The opening day will feature the rector of USACH, Rodrigo Vidal, and the rector of UAysén, Natacha Pino. The second day will include the participation of the rector of the University of Concepción, Carlos Saavedra; the rector of UMCE, Elisa Araya; and the rector of Diego Portales University, Carlos Peña, in the panel “Projections of Gender Equality Policies in Universities Considering the Current National Context.”.

“This meeting is unprecedented, as it brings together for the first time all the interdisciplinary teams from the gender departments, teams that have been involved in the design and implementation of gender policies at universities,” said Angélica Marín, coordinator of the Gender Equality Commission of the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities (CRUCH).

The meeting, which will bring together more than 120 representatives from 29 CRUCH universities, will take place this Wednesday, August 2nd and Thursday, August 3rd at the University of Santiago de Chile (USACH) and the University of Chile (UChile), respectively, and its main objective is for the gender teams to share their trajectories, learnings and challenges in the construction and installation of gender policies in the different campuses.

For Angélica Marín, who is also the Director of Gender Equality at the Metropolitan University of Educational Sciences (UMCE), “it was very necessary to bring together the gender teams, 5 years after the formal start of the work of the CRUCH Gender Equality Commission, which was created in 2018.”.

On the opening day, the rector of USACH, Rodrigo Vidal, and the rector of the University of Aysén, Natacha Pino, will welcome the teams from the 29 study centers that will participate in the event.

Among the invited authorities, it is worth highlighting the Superintendent of Higher Education, José Miguel Salazar; the Director of Evaluation and Accreditation of the National Accreditation Commission, Sonia Muñoz; the legislative and gender advisor of the Cabinet of the Undersecretary of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education, Irune Martínez; the professional of the Equality Policies Division of the Ministry of Women and Gender Equity, Marcela Gutiérrez Cocq; among others.

Meeting program

After the welcome greetings, the morning session includes a discussion entitled "Trajectory of the CRUCH Equality Commission and progress of the gender directorates" and, subsequently, a group work among the teams to share the trajectories of the universities in the last five years.

During the afternoon, some results on the process of incorporating gender into the educational field will be presented, followed by group work to share progress and challenges.

On the second day, hosted by the University of Chile, preliminary results regarding the implementation of Law 21.369, which regulates sexual harassment, violence, and gender discrimination in higher education, will be presented. Later, the discussion will focus on shared responsibility for caregiving, with an emphasis on university experiences and key challenges.

Later in the afternoon, the panel “Projections of gender equality policies in Universities considering the current national context” will take place, with the participation of the rector of the University of Concepción, Carlos Saavedra; the rector of UMCE, Elisa Araya; and the rector of the Diego Portales University, Carlos Peña.

The day will conclude with a space for dialogue between the participants and the main agreements.
