To train postgraduate students with disciplinary knowledge and research and communication skills to contribute, individually or within work teams, to the development and dissemination of knowledge in specific areas of Applied Linguistics, always within a framework of respect for the ethical norms of research.

Applicant Profile

The applicant for the Master's in Applied Linguistics is a professional who meets the admission requirements, and who in their application expressly states an interest in training in Applied Linguistics and learning to research the topics addressed by the research lines of the Program in accordance with what is stated in the Graduate Profile.

Graduate profile

Graduates of the Program will have specialized training that will allow them to critically apply current theoretical approaches and models of linguistic disciplines, as well as carry out research using designs and research methods relevant to the analysis of language phenomena and problems in specific areas of Applied Linguistics.
He will carry out his work rigorously, whether autonomously or within work teams, always based on an attitude of respect for the ethical norms of research and for the human person.

Lines of investigation

Language acquisition, learning and teaching:
This line of research brings together studies on language acquisition processes and investigations into L1 or L2 teaching and learning processes. The theoretical perspectives derive mainly, but not exclusively, from Applied Linguistics and Psycholinguistics.

Among the research carried out in this area are Fondecyt projects and internal projects on Spanish-English bilingualism; corrective and metalinguistic feedback on grammatical errors in learners of English as an L2; development of reading comprehension and fluency, among others.

Language, culture and society:
This line of research includes topics within sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, and emerging studies on academic literacy, among other areas. Research projects undertaken include Fondecyt grants and internal projects on languages in contact (Spanish-Mapudungun) and linguistic attitudes; research on academic writing in disciplinary communities and specialized discourse; and studies on argumentation among young people, older adults, and immigrants, taking into account sociodemographic variables.
