goals

The program's main objective is to train specialists with the theoretical, experimental, and methodological foundation necessary to gain a solid understanding of surface water and limnological systems and their relationship to human socio-economic activities. This academic program provides students with a strong foundation for pursuing advanced studies, while also equipping them with the skills to plan and develop professional and management activities related to surface water resources.

Applicant Profile

The general admission criteria for Master's Programs are governed by the General Regulations of the Master's Programs of the UACh (Annex 3.1, Art.19) which establishes as a general requirement having the academic degree of Bachelor or a professional title whose level and content are equivalent to those required for obtaining a Bachelor's degree.
The Master of Science in Water Resources is geared towards Chilean or foreign graduates in fields related to the program (Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Biology, Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology, Bachelor of Science in Geography, Forestry Engineering, Natural Resources Engineering, Geology, Agronomy, Physics, Geophysics, and related fields). Applicants must submit:
1. Certificate of title or academic degree.
2. Personal letter explaining the reasons for your application.
3. Curriculum vitae.
4. Official transcript of grades from your last degree or diploma.
5. Grade ranking.
6. Two letters of recommendation from distinguished academics.
7. A passport-sized photograph (2.5 x 3.5) with name and ID or passport number.
International students must legalize all documents and demonstrate proficiency in Spanish if it is not their native language. As of June 2017, applications to postgraduate programs at the Universidad Austral de Chile are submitted directly through an online application platform (https://secure12.uach.cl/Postgrado/PostulacionAdmision/).

Graduate profile

Graduates of the Master of Science Program specializing in Water Resources must possess:
a) a solid knowledge of surface water and limnological systems and their relationships with the socio-economic activities carried out by humans,
b) ability to discriminate between strategies that lead to better use and conservation of surface water resources,
c) qualification to identify the abiotic and biotic (natural and social) variables that should be considered to address scientific problems relating to surface water resources,
d) ability to propose and/or direct research projects in areas of their specialization that involve surface water resources, considering both abiotic and biotic aspects,
e) ability to communicate the knowledge generated in research related to surface water resources.

Lines of investigation

Currently, there are three lines of research, which have been consolidated over the last five years. The most notable changes are related to the expansion of the program to include lines with a more biological focus (Limnology and Aquatic Pollution) and a physical focus (Glaciology, Fluvial Geomorphology). The program thus responds to the growing demand from students and society for essential tools for the management and conservation of inland aquatic resources. Furthermore, the Hydrology and Watershed Management research line remains the core of the program, integrating physical and management aspects of aquatic resources.
The three lines of research are:
A) Hydrology and basin management
B) Limnology and water pollution
C) Glaciology and fluvial geomorphology
