goals

The Master's Degree in Contemporary History establishes the following main objectives in training: General results:
a) To deepen interdisciplinary knowledge in History and Social Sciences.
b) Develop original and autonomous research with an interdisciplinary perspective.
c) To generate a critical reflection situated from the south-south of Chile on problems of the present time.
Specific results:
a) Understand current interdisciplinary debates regarding predominant theories, approaches, methodologies and themes in History and Social Sciences.
b) Use various primary sources, techniques and instruments for collecting and analyzing information.
c)Understand the methodologies specific to writing a History of the present time.
d) Develop critical and reflective thinking about historical and social reality, from the south-south of Chile.
e) To understand the relationships and interdisciplinary work in History and Social Sciences.

Applicant Profile

Applicants must submit the following documents:
a) Curriculum vitae.
b) Notarized copy of the Certificate of Title and/or Degree.
c) Official transcript of grades from your last degree or title (including scale).
d) Grade ranking.
e) Two letters of recommendation from academics or people who are familiar with the professional performance
of the applicant.
f) Letter of interest, which incorporates a preliminary proposal of the thesis they intend to develop.
The selection process consists of the following stages:
1) Submission of background information through a Public Competition via an online platform.
2) Pre-selection of candidates for admission. This process, carried out by the Program committee, consists of
analyze and qualify the background information requested for the application.
The candidate pre-selection is based on an Entrance Evaluation Guide that considers
the following criteria and weightings:
Academic Background (40%)
Work experience and other extracurricular activities (25%)
Reasons for taking the program (25%)
Letters of recommendation (10%)

Graduate profile

The graduate will be able to:
I) To understand the development achieved by the interdisciplinary relationship between History and the Social Sciences in recent decades, in terms of theoretical approaches, perspectives, methodologies, and predominant themes, as well as to understand the disciplinary work in a critical and reflective way. In particular, to be familiar with the main historiographical and current social science debates, recognizing authors, schools, and trends.
II) Develop original and autonomous research in Contemporary History, following the validated stages in the respective line of research, from the definition of a problem, through bibliographic review, information gathering, analysis and synthesis, to the writing and publication of results.
III) To relate historiographical and social science knowledge in order to achieve an interdisciplinary study of topics relevant to the present day in/from southern Chile. Furthermore, to value teamwork, collaboration, and integration as the primary means for developing such studies.

Lines of investigation

The program's lines of research are:
a) Historical problems of the time of the Present Time
b) Historiographical and social debates
c) Studies of capitalism, the State, labor, territory, memory and regional history
They constitute the curricular axes of the program.
Within them, various lines of research related to the study of Time are developed.
Present: Economic History, Social History, Political History, Regional History, History and Memory,
Heritage and Territory, Historical Anthropology, Social Theory and interdisciplinary debates.
