During the visit, the rectors of the Bavarian universities expressed their interest in establishing cooperative ties and invited their Chilean counterparts to visit their institutions.
The group, comprised of nine universities from the state of Bavaria and led by the Minister of Science, Research and the Arts, Dr. Wolfgang Heubisch, met with members of the Council of Rectors, including the rectors Víctor Pérez of the University of Chile, Ignacio Sánchez of the Catholic University, and José Rodríguez of the Federico Santa María Technical University. Also participating were the Vice-Rector of the University of Los Lagos, Francisco Gangas, and the Vice-Rector of the University of Playa Ancha, Carmen Ibáñez.
This visit reflected the interest of Bavarian universities in forging cooperative ties with Chilean institutions. During the meeting, a delegation of Chilean university presidents was invited to visit Bavaria in the near future to further explore avenues for collaboration.
Bavaria is among Germany's most important states in scientific and economic terms, as a significant portion of the country's industry is located there. This facilitates connections between industry and university research, and Chile could learn from these university-business collaboration initiatives. For Bavaria, Chile represents a commercial platform for the region, which is why it has even opened a trade office in Santiago.
Of the visiting rectors, seven lead universities of applied sciences and two lead research institutions. These institutions have diverse areas of specialization, ranging from food technology to business, with medical sciences and engineering being the most prominent.
