The Rector of USACH was nominated by the plenary of the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities and the Director General of UNESCO recently appointed him as a member of this international body.
“It is an honor to represent the communities of the CRUCH universities in this important international forum, promoting excellence in education with inclusion, at the service of the country and the construction of a more democratic, equitable and sustainable society,” said the rector of the University of Santiago of Chile (USACH), Rodrigo Vidal, upon receiving the news of his appointment as a member of the Governing Council of the UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (IESALC).
Vidal was nominated by the plenary session of the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities (CRUCH) in September 2023 and appointed on August 26 by the Director-General of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), Audrey Azoulay. He will hold the position until the closing of the 44th session of the UNESCO General Conference in 2027.
The IESALC Governing Council is the body that oversees and adjusts the institute's work program, in accordance with the guidelines approved by the UNESCO General Conference every two years.
This Council is made up of nine members: six are government representatives elected at a meeting of delegations from the region at the UNESCO General Conference and three are appointed by the UNESCO Directorate-General in consultation with the Councils of Rectors of the region or their equivalents.
The IESALC was created by the UNESCO General Conference in 1997, from the Regional Center for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (CRESALC), and is the only specialized institute of the United Nations system to contribute to the development and transformation of higher education in the Member States, promoting the production of knowledge and discussing public policies in this area.
