The meeting addressed current issues such as the 2012 Budget, the setting of fees, and the maintenance of scholarships for students who will be in classes during January and February.

This morning, the first official meeting took place between the new board of directors of the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities (CRUCH) and the Minister of Education, Felipe Bulnes.
The meeting addressed current issues such as the scope of the 2012 Budget, tuition fees, and the extension of living stipends for students attending classes in January and February. The Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities (CRUCH) also announced the reactivation of the Joint Committee on Contingency Issues, with the aim of addressing and resolving various matters of interest to public universities.
Regarding the 2012 Budget, one issue that concerns the Council of Rectors, and which was raised with Minister Bulnes, is the required score for those seeking admission to higher education to qualify for any type of scholarship. “We are concerned that a person who was selected with 500 points on the PSU (University Selection Test) may not be eligible for a scholarship; this is an issue we still need to address,” emphasized Rector Juan Manuel Zolezzi, Executive Vice President of the Council of Rectors.
Regarding the significance of this first meeting, the university presidents stated that this meeting is the first step in an intense period of work. “We will work together with the Ministry of Education on both the pending issues and the agenda for 2012. This new Executive Committee expects to do good work together with the Ministry of Education,” said Sergio Lavanchy, president of the University of Concepción and alternate executive vice president of the Council of Presidents.
Regarding the deadlines set for traditional universities to inform the Ministry of Education (MINEDUC) of their 2012 tuition fees, the rectors clarified that all universities will have submitted their tuition proposals before the 9th, even though the public sector adjustment will be defined around the 12th.
