The Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities (CRUCH) expresses its firm support for the Rector of the University of Chile, Rosa Devés, who has recently been the target of derogatory and insolent remarks.
During the protests in support of the Palestinian cause at the University of Chile last weekend, a banner was displayed at the main building with a message demanding the severing of ties with Israeli universities, accompanied by an offensive image of the Rector. We reject all forms of violence and attacks against individuals.
Since the protests began in May, Rector Devés has maintained that universities should be spaces for dialogue where all voices are heard. Regarding the banner, she has emphasized that “it is not the way to express ideas.”.
As CRUCH, we attest to the Rector's ongoing efforts to create spaces that promote dialogue, as well as her respect for the diversity of ideas, her pluralism, and her commitment to freedom and human rights.
That is why we express our support for Rector Devés, who has handled this complex situation in an exemplary manner and with a university vision that we fully share.
Finally, we endorse the words of the Rector, who has stated that the university must be “a place of peace, a place of dialogue, a place of encounter,” and we reaffirm our commitment to these fundamental values, essential for university life and for building a more just and equitable society. It is vital that our educational institutions be spaces where mutual respect, the constructive exchange of ideas, and the pursuit of the common good prevail.
