The Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage requested three representatives from CRUCH to participate in the Interministerial Advisory Commission to Commemorate the 80th anniversary of Gabriela Mistral's Nobel Prize.
The commemoration will extend from April 7, the poet's birthday, until December 10, 2025, the date on which she received the Nobel Prize for Literature eight decades ago.
The Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities (CRUCH) elected the rector of the University of La Serena (ULS), Luperfina Rojas, as its representative to the Advisory Commission
Interministerial to Commemorate the 80th Anniversary of Gabriela Mistral's Nobel Prize, created by the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage.
In addition to the rector of ULS, CRUCH elected the Dean of the Faculty of History, Geography and Letters of the Metropolitan University of Educational Sciences (UMCE), Jaime Galgani Muñoz; and the academic of the Faculty of Education of the Catholic University of the Most Holy Conception (UCSC), Yenny Ariz Castillo.
The Interministerial Advisory Commission was formed on January 30th with the participation of authorities from the Ministry of Women and Gender Equity; the Ministry of Education; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; the Ministry of Public Works; and the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications. Representatives from the Senate; the Chamber of Deputies; the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities (CRUCH); the Association of Regional Governors of Chile; the Association of Municipalities of Chile; the Embassy of Sweden in Chile; the Imagen de Chile Foundation; the Women's Community; the Chilean Industrial Development Association (SOFOFA); the Franciscan Order in Chile; and the Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center (GAM) also participated.
The Commission, created by ministerial decree, aims to advise on the planning and coordination of commemorative activities that highlight the cultural and educational legacy of Gabriela Mistral, both nationally and internationally. Article 4 of the decree, The invitation is extended to CRUCH to participate with up to three representatives, who will be able to contribute their expert vision from the academic and educational field.

Role of the USerena
Rector Rojas stated that “at the University of La Serena we are custodians of Gabriela Mistral’s legacy and therefore we are honored to represent CRUCH before this government commission and also to accompany the Regional Government in the preparation of all the activities that will be carried out in the Coquimbo Region starting on April 7, the date on which we remember the birth of our Nobel Prize winner and which was also established as the National Day of Gabriela Mistral, which was approved in 2024 by Congress.”.
The Gabriela Mistral House in Las Compañías, located in La Serena, is protected by the University. It is a building, recently restored with funds from the Coquimbo Regional Government, of significant historical and cultural value, where the poet and Nobel Laureate in Literature resided between 1903 and 1905, at the beginning of her teaching and literary career. "For us, keeping alive the heritage and work of our illustrious poet is an important task. This house remains open so that the entire community can learn details of her life and immerse themselves in the legacy of our Nobel Laureate in Literature," said the Rector.
The University of La Serena is also preparing a program of commemorative activities that will begin in the context of International Women's Day, specifically aimed at highlighting the figure of Gabriela Mistral and her contribution to women's empowerment. Thus, on March 7, the event "In the Year of Commemoration of the Nobel Prize in Literature: Celebrating the Voice and Vision of Gabriela Mistral" will take place. Its purpose is "to make visible and value the legacy of our first Nobel Prize winner in Literature, highlighting her invaluable contribution as a woman, educator, poet, and emblematic figure in national and international history. Her work and vision have left a profound mark on education and on the fight for gender equality, continuing to inspire generations today," stated Rector Rojas.
