The commission is headed by the rector of PUCV, Nelson Vásquez, and by the rector of UMCE, Elisa Araya, and is made up of almost 40 experts from the universities of the Council that provide teacher training.

The report will be presented to the rectors of CRUCH at the plenary session on November 30.

For almost a year, the members of the Commission for Strengthening Pedagogies of the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities (CRUCH) have met periodically to fulfill the task of carrying out a diagnosis of the situation of pedagogies in Chile and preparing a report with recommendations.

Thus, after a laborious process, on November 30 the commission will present a report at the CRUCH plenary session with proposals aimed at promoting improvements and transformations in the field of initial and continuing teacher training (FICD), articulating two moments of the training trajectory: initial teacher training and professional teacher development.

The commission, established by agreement of the university rectors on September 29, 2022, is headed by Nelson Vásquez, Rector of the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso (PUCV), and Elisa Araya, Rector of the Metropolitan University of Educational Sciences (UMCE). It comprises 37 experts from 28 universities within the Council that offer teacher training programs. The commission's Executive Secretary is Professor Carmen Montecinos, who also serves as Director of the Center for Educational Leaders at PUCV.

Final stretch

The commission's report will have five parts: innovative experiences in strengthening pedagogies in CRUCH universities (2001-2023), principles, strategic objectives, critical issues and recommendations.

This Monday, October 16, the members of the commission held a final working meeting to clarify the recommendations made in previous meetings by the four subcommittees (Initial and teacher training; Linkage with the Environment and Territory; Regulatory Frameworks; and Public Policies for Teacher Professional Development), as well as those provided by the Council of Deans of the Faculties of Education (CONFAUCE).

The critical issues were addressed with CONFAUCE in a session held on September 29 of this year, with the participation of its president, the Dean of UMCE, Solange Tenorio.

Meanwhile, several members of the commission met on August 7 to establish closing guidelines, regarding the work plan and the structuring principles of the document.

It is worth mentioning that in July, during the final stage of preparing the report, an Editorial Committee was formed, comprised of the chairs of the subcommittees (Iván Salinas from the University of Chile, Diana Veneros from the Metropolitan Technological University, Fancy Castro from the University of Bío Bío, and Catherine Flores from the University of Santiago, Chile) and led by the Executive Secretary of the commission. This committee also benefited from the collaboration of the Dean of Diego Portales University, Paula Louzano; the Dean of Alberto Hurtado University, Marisol Latorre; the Dean of the Catholic University of the North, Patricia Castillo; the Vice-Dean of the University of Santiago, Chile, Saúl Contreras; and the academic from the Catholic University of Maule, Nancy Lepe.

After consolidating the various contributions to the document, the text will be delivered to the rector of PUCV, Nelson Vásquez, and the rector of UMCE, Elisa Araya, who will be in charge of the final review before it is made known to the rectors of CRUCH, at the session at the end of November at the University of Talca.
