  • Vice President of CRUCH, Rector Aldo Valle: "Just as the Higher Education project conceives the access system, the public decision is confused with the government decision"

According to Valle, there is a risk of bureaucratization and politicization that is serious for an admission system that until now has shown characteristics of autonomy, independence and transparency that the country has historically recognized. "These risks lead us to reject, once again, the design that the higher education reform project has given for the new common access system," he said.

Today the 2018 Admission Process began formally with the publication of official documents and recommendations to register online at the PSU. The registration period begins next Monday, June 5 and will run until Friday, August 4.

In the context of the beginning of the 2018 Admission Process, the Vice President of Cruch, rector Aldo Valle, referred to the terms in which, last Tuesday, within the framework of the private vote on the Higher Education bill, the Commission of Education of the Lower House approved the creation of the new Common Access System.

"The Council of Rectors has always stated that, as the access system is conceived in the project, the public decision is unfortunately confused with the governmental decision or with the decision of the government of the day," said Rector Valle.

This, because the project lies in the will of the executive power, decisions that until now have been part of collegiate bodies such as the CRUCH. "For the same reason, we are going to insist that the government's proposal be modified and also what has been approved in these days in the Chamber's Education Commission," Valle emphasized.

Regarding the functions carried out today by DEMRE - the body that administers the process by mandate of the CRUCH - Valle said that they cannot be made available for a tender by the government of the day, without the institutions being able to participate. .

"It is not clear in the legislative design that we know so far in what way the Government is going to guarantee that these very sensitive and relevant functions are carried out, guaranteeing all the institutions of responsibility, of transparency," Valle warned.

The Executive Vice President of CRUCH stated that “we believe the project must move forward with the creation of a Board of Directors that can act autonomously, providing guarantees to the institutions. As it stands today, we don't know who will make the decisions in the future regarding who will operate the system, because the will of one government may be one thing, but that of the next may be quite another. In that sense, we believe there is a risk of bureaucratization and politicization, which is serious for an admissions system that, until now, has demonstrated characteristics of autonomy, independence, and transparency that the country has historically recognized. These risks lead us to reject, once again, the design that the higher education reform project has given for the new common access system,” emphasized Rector Valle.

Beginning of the Admission Process

With the publication of the official documents "Rules, Registration and Important Aspects of the Admission Process" and, "Preliminary List of Careers and Weightings", the Executive Vice President of CRUCH, in addition to the Director of the Single Admission System (SUA), María Elena González, and the Director of the Department of Evaluation, Measurement and Educational Registration (DEMRE) of the University of Chile, Leonor Varas, formally began the 2018 Admission Process.

The information contained in both documents –which are available in digital format on the SUA and DEMRE websites- “is essential for students to participate in the admission process, having the necessary elements to make the best decisions according to their interests and motivations. For this reason, it is necessary for students to read these documents before enrolling in the PSU ”, highlighted the Director of the Single Admission System (SUA).

Regarding registration for the PSU (University Selection Test), it was emphasized that it will begin next Monday, June 5th, and will run until Friday, August 4th. This means there will be a period of more than two months (61 days) to register online through the DEMRE website (www.demre.cl). The registration fee for the PSU is $30,960.

The Director of the SUA, María Elena González, recalled that the students belonging to the promotion of the year of municipal establishments and subsidized individuals can access the PSU Scholarship granted by JUNAEB (National Board of School Aid and Scholarships). To do this, “when registering, the student completes a single form. In the event that it complies with the requirements established by JUNAEB to grant the PSU Scholarship, it will know it at the end of the operation, automatically ”, he explained.

Another relevant aspect is the use of the password. The Director of DEMRE, Leonor Varas, explained that “when people enter the DEMRE website to register for the first time, they must enter their RUT and date of birth. After that, a new page will open where they will have to: create a password, enter a valid email address, and answer security questions. It is important to remember this password, as they will need it to perform each time they enter the website and for any procedure they require (on the site) ”.

Finally, the Director of the SUA made 4 main recommendations for the applicants: “the first thing is that they read the Rules of the Process before registering in the PSU, so that they are duly informed to face each of the stages of the process and so that they are in knowledge of their rights and duties; The second thing is that they review the Preliminary List of careers and their requirements; The third thing is that they take care of their password, because they will need it during the whole process; and, fourthly, that they download the 2018 Admission Process Calendar so that they are aware of the dates and deadlines ”.

It should be remembered that the dates of submission of the PSU are Monday, November 27 and Tuesday, November 28 of this year and, the recognition of rooms, on Sunday 26. The other relevant dates of the process are available in the 2018 Admission Process Calendar, on the SUA website.

What's new?

As of this 2018 Admission Process, the Ranking Score will be calculated only once and will be kept for future processes. That is, the person who signs up for the first time to take the PSU in this process, or who has never had the Grade Rankings calculated by educational context, their Grade Notes Ranking score will be calculated according to the current norm and this score will be the same if you participate in other processes.

On the other hand, as of this year, two new private universities were assigned to the Single Admission System, the San Sebastián University and the Autonomous University of Chile.
