CRUCH calls for dialogue to prevail in the face of violence at the University of Santiago, Chile

The Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities (CRUCH) expresses its deep concern regarding the events that occurred on September 30 at the University of Santiago of Chile (USACH), where a demonstration resulted in acts of violence and significant damage to university facilities.

As CRUCH, we are convinced that no difference of opinion or conflict justifies the use of violence or actions that violate the integrity of people or affect the normal functioning of universities.

Likewise, we maintain that the development of our institutions and the safeguarding of academic excellence must be sustained within a framework of democratic deliberation based on a climate of respect and shared responsibility.

Finally, we call for situations of this nature not to be repeated and urge that dialogue, deliberation and peaceful coexistence prevail as essential foundations of university life.
