Gender Equality Commission
CRUCH universities shared a message in the context of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, commemorated on November 25. This is in addition to various activities organized by universities in different regions of the country, such as talks, fairs, campaigns, discussions, and more, which can be viewed on the CRUCH Instagram account (highlighted stories #25N). here.
Fernanda Kri, the new rector in charge of the CRUCH Gender Equality Commission, stated that "this November 25th we want to ensure that from all areas of university life we work to eradicate violence against women.".
Under the title "Chilean universities without gender violence", members of the Gender Equality Commission of the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities (CRUCH) prepared a Joint video to commemorate November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. In addition to this initiative by the commission, which brings together 30 directors of Gender Studies, the educational institutions have planned various activities in their respective regions.
It is worth remembering that this date was established by the United Nations in 1999, in memory of Patria, Minerva and María Teresa Mirabal, three Dominican sisters assassinated on this day in 1960.
On the occasion of this international commemoration, the rector of the University of O'Higgins and head of the Gender Equality Commission, Fernanda Kri, stated that "this November 25th we want to ensure that from all areas of university life we work to eradicate violence against women.".
He explained that this commitment encompasses “the educational processes, both to train professionals who are aware of and sensitive to these issues, and our daily work within the institution, in the classroom, and in our interactions within the university community.” It also includes “our other areas of activity, our community outreach, and our research.”.
For her part, the coordinator of the Gender Equality Commission, Angélica Marín, highlighted that "the CRUCH universities have made significant progress in eradicating gender violence.".
Meanwhile, Hayley Durán, head of the Gender Violence Eradication program, one of the commission's four areas of focus, commented that “the CRUCH universities have been working continuously on eradicating gender violence. It's work that is done throughout the year, not just in November.”.
Balance of CRUCH universities
“This November 25th, the 30 universities of CRUCH can make a positive assessment,” stated Angélica Marín, who is also the Executive Secretary of the Gender and Sexualities Office of the Metropolitan University of Educational Sciences (UMCE).
A significant achievement is that “all universities have comprehensive policies against gender-based violence and discrimination, staff trained in human rights and gender perspective. Furthermore, most have a strategy to publicize the existence of this policy and the protocols,” Marín emphasized.
Regarding the progress of implementing Law 21.369, she explained that “we have the prevention models and risk assessments required by the law. In many cases, surveys have been conducted, awareness-raising processes have taken place through workshops and campaigns, and orientations have been provided to students and staff, along with training and capacity-building strategies, such as in-person and self-paced courses.» She added, «There has also been progress in incorporating the topics of violence and human rights into undergraduate curricula.”.
Regarding the investigation model outlined in the law, he noted that most institutions "have bodies with special powers to investigate and punish, as well as measures to protect victims and provide access to timely information; and all universities have psychological support, academic and legal flexibility.".
Regarding the challenges, she mentioned the need to make progress in three areas: incorporating this topic into postgraduate and continuing education curricula; updating academics on matters of violence and non-discrimination; and evaluating prevention and research models.
Finally, the coordinator of the CRUCH Gender Equality Commission warned that hate speech and anti-rights rhetoric have emerged in some universities, "so we have to be very vigilant, especially regarding the prevention of gender violence.".
Eradication of violence
Regarding the eradication of gender violence in CRUCH universities, Hayley Durán explained that "we focus on "We provide care to people who are victims of gender violence, sexual harassment or discrimination, but we also do prevention, awareness-raising and promotion of safe and violence-free environments.".
Furthermore, from the Gender Violence Eradication axis of the commission, “This year we have been working together with the Ministry of Women and Gender Equity, contributing to the National Plan on gender violence and, also, we continue to make progress in complying with Law 21.369. Along with this, we are preparing a document of guidelines for the care of the teams that work with violence within the CRUCH universities,” commented Durán, who is also in charge of the Gender Equity Unit of the University of Aysén.
