An expert in professional learning and teacher training will present at the international seminar of the CRUCH Commission for Strengthening Pedagogies

  • The Dr. Lily Orland, from the University of Haifa (Israel), will visit Chile during May, in which context he will participate in the event with a Conference on attracting, attrition, and retention of teachers in the global context.
  •  The seminar, entitled “Strengthening Initial and Continuing Teacher Training: International Dialogue”, will be held next Friday, May 19, at the Center for Advanced Studies of the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso, Santiago campus, and will be broadcast via Zoom.

Invited by the Commission for Strengthening Pedagogies of the Council of Rectors (CRUCH), Dr. Lily Orland, academic at the University of Haifa and expert in professional learning and teacher training, will present at the seminar “Strengthening Initial and Continuing Teacher Training: International Dialogue”, which will take place next Friday, May 19, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

In her lecture, Dr. Orland, who during her visit to Chile will also participate in activities at the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso (PUCV), the University of Concepción (UDEC), and the University of Chile, He will present the conference entitled “Attraction, Dropout and Retention of Teachers: Why, What and How?”, in which he will discuss global experts on the subject.

The expert, who was born and raised in Chile but has worked in Israel since 1971, will address teacher dropout from a multifactorial perspective in her presentation, outlining its complexities, the various theories for addressing it, proposed actions, and what these entail.

Dr. Lily Orland has been Dean of the Faculty of Education and Dean of the Graduate Studies Department at the University of Haifa, launching the foundation of the Bloom Graduate School from that academic institution. She has actively participated in the main working group committees on teacher training at the national and international levels., as well as on numerous research committees and executive editorial boards of leading education journals (https://sites.google.com/edu.haifa.ac.il/lily-o-b/home).

The creation of knowledge in this area is not only a theoretical contribution but also fundamental for developing high-quality professionals, prepared to face the new challenges posed by the Chilean education system,” stated Nelson Vásquez, Rector of the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso and President of the Commission.

Contributing to the debate and public policy

The seminar, which is part of the actions committed to by the Commission, It seeks to be an opportunity for dialogue, sharing of progress and feedback with academic, teaching, school communities, institutions and educational actors from different territories of our country.

«The Commission for Strengthening Pedagogy is one of the most strategically important commissions for CRUCH, as its purpose is to generate a public policy proposal to strengthen the initial and ongoing training of teachers in the country. In this sense, this seminar is a forum of great importance since it will allow for the discussion and attention to relevant aspects of the Commission's work. Furthermore, it will feature top-tier moderators and speakers from across the country, and will include the participation of Dr. Lily Orland Barak, an internationally renowned expert who is also very familiar with the Chilean context. Consequently, we are facing an event of international caliber with the potential for significant national impact,» commented Emilio Rodríguez, Rector of the University of Tarapacá and Executive Vice President of CRUCH.

Precisely, the event It is also intended to publicize the work of the Commission, whose mission is to develop a document with public policy guidance., focused on problems related to the attraction, training and retention of teachers, addressing the core problems and providing suggestions and proposals in the short, medium and long term.

Within the framework of collaborative development for a public policy, The event will also feature the presence and remarks of Miguel Routhier, Head of the University Education Division of the Ministry of Education, who will comment on policies to strengthen initial teacher training and opportunities for collaboration with Chilean Universities. The rector of the Metropolitan University of Educational Sciences (UMCE), Elisa Araya, will also be presenting., on the purposes and perspectives of the CRUCH Pedagogy Strengthening Commission.

In the second part of the activity, face-to-face working sessions will be held in rooms for each subcommittee.Initial Teacher Training: Present and Future; Public Policies for Teacher Professional Development; Linkage with the Environment and Territory and Regulatory Framework.
