Delegates from CRUCH universities met for two days at the University of Aysén, in Coyhaique, to address the challenges that the new Higher Education Access Test (PAES) poses to the system as a whole.

Areas for improvement were also identified, such as having clear regulations, a timeline for the processes, "and that there is a Good Practices Manual not only for CRUCH universities but for the entire system, since it is a very relevant process for universities and of course for potential students," said Ruth Candia, president of the CRUCH Admission and Enrollment Commission.

“During the working session, the main challenges of this 2023 Admission process were analyzed, which comes full of changes,” said Ruth Candia, president of the Admission and Enrollment Commission of the Council of Rectors, referring to the meeting that took place on Thursday, November 17 and Friday, November 18 at the University of Aysén, in Coyhaique.

Candia explained that in the current process there is “a new PAES test, a new Mathematical Competence Test (M2), a qualifying and mandatory test for more than 475 careers in the system, a new calculation formula for the weighted score, the 20 applications that an applicant can make and, on the other hand, we do not have a cut-off score on the PAES scale (100 to 1000 points).”.

In this scenario, the president of the commission and Director of Student Academic Records at the University of La Frontera, considered that the space for conversation was very relevant, especially because for several admission delegates it is their first process.

Therefore, “it is important that all CRUCH delegates apply the current regulations, and that applicants are well guided, especially in a process with many changes, so one of the agreements is to reinforce that the applicant applies in strict order of preference, as well as to reinforce that the application simulators are only for reference,” said Ruth Candia.

During the working session, which included the participation of delegates from CRUCH universities, in addition to analyzing the current regulations for the 2023 Admission process, the commission's proposed Good Practices Manual was also analyzed, as well as the information supporting applicants during the application process, and the various aspects that can be improved for the 2024 process.

Main concerns

One of the purposes of the meeting was to learn about the challenges identified by universities in different regions of the country, as well as areas for improvement. To this end, presentations were given by the regional delegates for the north, Loreto Valenzuela, from Arturo Prat University; for the coastal region, Claudia Valenzuela, from Playa Ancha University; for the metropolitan region, Osmar Valdebenito, from the University of Chile; and for the southern region, Cristián Cárdenas, from the University of the Holy Conception.

Regarding areas for improvement, there are several aspects considered necessary, such as “having clear regulations, having key definitions on time, having a schedule of processes that allows for decision-making in each university, and having a Good Practices Manual not only for CRUCH universities but for the entire system, since it is a very relevant process for universities and of course for potential students,” Candia stated.

The 2023 admissions process will begin with the administration of the new University Entrance Exam on Monday, November 28, Tuesday, November 29, and Wednesday, November 30. Results will be released on January 3, 2023, and the application period, which begins that same day, will run until January 6. Selection results will be published on January 17, and university registration will take place between January 18 and 27.
