goals

To train specialists in the field of language sciences at a first level of higher specialization, enabling them to understand both the theory and the research methods cultivated in linguistics and their application to the Spanish or English language (depending on the specialization).

Applicant Profile

1.- Possess the degree of Bachelor of a professional title whose level, content and duration of studies are equivalent to those required to obtain the degree of Bachelor at the University of Chile.
2.- Having obtained the corresponding degree or title with a grade of no less than 5.0 (five point zero) or equivalent in the studies indicated above.
3.- Possess knowledge of at least one foreign language that allows you to understand written texts related to the specialty, in English, German, French or Italian, in the case of applicants for the Spanish language mention, and advanced English knowledge, in the case of applicants for the English language mention.
4.- Possess the maturity and seriousness of purpose indispensable for successfully undertaking advanced studies in linguistics.

Graduate profile

Graduates will be able to:
1.- To work primarily in the academic field.
2.- Identify problems that are relevant or of interest to the development of Hispanic or English linguistics (depending on the mention).
3.- Investigate relevant problems related to language and the Spanish or English language (depending on the mention).
4.- Report research results in the area of Hispanic or English linguistics in public media such as specialized meetings or journals of the discipline.
5.- Apply strategies aimed at developing skills in the field of Spanish as a mother tongue or English as a foreign language.

Lines of investigation

1. Descriptive and theoretical linguistics, comprised of studies in phonology, grammar, generative linguistics, and lexicography and lexicology
2.- Historical linguistics, made up of research in the history of the Spanish language and Hispanic philology.
3. Applied linguistics, whether to the teaching of Spanish or English.
4.- Interdisciplinary linguistic fields, including sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology applied to languages/varieties in Chile, psycholinguistics and cognitive linguistics.
