goals

To train scientists in the Magallanes Region interested in developing as researchers of excellence with the capacity to carry out independent research activities in Antarctic and sub-Antarctic sciences, enhancing scientific production and the integral development of individuals. To train researchers with solid theoretical and practical foundations in the area of Natural Sciences focused on the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic environment, and in the interdisciplinary fields of biological conservation and/or Earth sciences.

Applicant Profile

The applicant must hold an academic degree of Bachelor or equivalent (when it comes to courses with a minimum duration of eight semesters), a professional title (when it comes to courses with a minimum duration of 10 semesters), or a professional title in areas related to this program, granted by Chilean or foreign universities, and attend a personal interview with the Postgraduate Program Committee (CPP) either in person, by videoconference or another modality previously agreed with the applicant (for applicants from other regions or from abroad).

Graduate profile

Graduates of the Doctoral Program in Antarctic and Subantarctic Sciences at the University of Magallanes will be able to: Propose and develop autonomous and original research in the area of Antarctic and subantarctic sciences with national and international projections.
To formulate and develop research proposals based on scientific hypotheses that address scientific challenges in the field. To integrate the various areas of Antarctic and sub-Antarctic sciences to generate basic and/or applied scientific knowledge and advances.

Lines of investigation

Antarctic and Subantarctic Science: A research area encompassing the study of biodiversity in terrestrial and marine ecosystems, and Earth sciences in the Magallanes Subantarctic ecoregion and the Antarctic continent. It incorporates management and conservation studies of endemic species, vulnerability to global changes, and their effects on our pristine region. Over 400 publications have been produced.
