Representatives of the Council of Rectors expressed to President Piñera the commitment of the universities to social peace.
On the occasion, the executive vice president of CRUCH, Aldo Valle, stated that “on the basis of peace, we can effectively advance in the purpose of rebuilding the confidence of citizens in our institutions and advance in the political and institutional changes that the country it requires in an urgent way ”.
On behalf of the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities (CRUCH), nine rectors attended the meeting convened by the President of the Republic Sebastián Piñera to express that the CRUCH universities share his call to commit to social peace.
On that occasion, they presented the president with a letter making this commitment public. “We do so with the understanding that, based on peace, we can effectively move forward in the purpose of rebuilding citizens' trust in our institutions and advancing the political and institutional changes that the country urgently requires,” stated Aldo Valle, executive vice president of CRUCH, at the end of the meeting on Thursday, November 14.
On the other hand, as the Council of Rectors “we call on the political system as a whole to hopefully reach a constitutional agreement that responds to an already historic citizen demand so that, ultimately, we have more representative institutions, institutions that do not lose hopefully the trust of society and certainly also so that all the necessary changes are made to provide the most solid foundation that social peace must always have, which is harmony, social cohesion and social justice ”, said Valle.
The executive vice president described as "essential" to make this call known "and ask everyone to join in, because social peace is an indispensable condition to achieve the purposes that as a country we are declaring these days."
In addition to the rector Valle, the alternate executive vice president and rector of the U. Técnica Federico Santa María, Darcy Fuenzalida; the rector of the University of Chile, Ennio Vivaldi; from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, Ignacio Sánchez; from the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso, Claudio Elórtegui; from the U. Técnica Metropolitana, Luis Pinto; from the Metropolitan University of Education Sciences, Jaime Espinosa; from the U. de Playa Ancha, Patricio Sanhueza; and from the U. Alberto Hurtado, Eduardo Silva. In addition, the rector of the DUOC, Ricardo Paredes, accompanied them.
CRUCH call to the political system
Regarding the mechanisms for amending the Constitution, Valle stated that “this is a task and a responsibility of the political system.” He added that “the greatest effort must be made to effectively restore trust, representativeness, and thus the legitimacy of the political system, because it has undoubtedly been damaged. It is therefore the task of the political system to reach an agreement that provides the answer the country is waiting for and has been demanding for so long.”.
