In a letter addressed to the president of the G9 Network of Non-State Public Universities, Rector Claudio Elórtegui, “the members of the Council of Rectors fully share the unequivocal conviction that the G9 universities have historically contributed to the development of higher education in the country, scientific research and culture in all its manifestations.”.
The Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities unanimously expressed its support for the G9 Network of Non-State Public Universities, considering that the draft law for higher education reform, recently submitted to Parliament, does not recognize the public contribution of the institutions that make up the G9 Network.
The CRUCH, through its executive vice president, Rector Aldo Valle, sent a formal letter to the president of the G9 Network, Rector Claudio Elórtegui, stating that "the members of the Council of Rectors widely share the view that the G9 universities have historically contributed to the development of higher education in the country, scientific research and culture in all its manifestations.".
Similarly, the rectors emphasized that the non-state universities belonging to the CRUCH (Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities) “have made a valuable contribution to the public sector that should be recognized by the new legislation and policies implemented in the future as a result of the reform to the higher education system.” Therefore, the letter states that “these universities should not be treated in the same way as private universities created after 1981, especially regarding institutional contributions that should ensure their development, given the social and symbolic value that Chilean society has bestowed upon them.”.
Furthermore, the letter expresses "a willingness to recognize each other based on the diversity of institutions that make up the Council of Rectors, all for the benefit of the common good and the national objectives for a better higher education in the country.".
The letter, dated August 18, 2016, was sent in response to the G9 Network's request for a formal statement of support submitted to the Council of Rectors at the end of July. The matter was analyzed by the full Council of Rectors at its monthly session in July and subsequently evaluated by the CRUCH Executive Committee.
