Statement
Public
Regarding the mobilization called by CONFECH for April 21st and the invitation to the Council of Rectors to join it, CRUCH publicly communicates the following:
The Council of Rectors expressly addressed the content of the invitation made to it by CONFECH, in the session held last Monday, April 18.
On this occasion, the CRUCH reiterates its appreciation for the participation of university communities in certain public policies, especially those that directly affect them. The Council also points out that there are points of agreement between certain positions held by the CONFECH and the CRUCH's stance on relevant aspects of higher education reform.
However, while acknowledging that the student movement has valid reasons for holding the planned mobilization, the Council of Rectors believes that it is up to each university community to make its own decisions regarding participation in it.
The Council of Rectors reaffirms its unwavering respect for the rights of assembly, petition, and peaceful demonstration. The student mobilization called for tomorrow responds to the legitimate right to publicly express well-founded disagreements with the procedures and proposals of the higher education reform process. However, we must also express that this demonstration cannot be indifferent to the mourning for the death of former President Patricio Aylwin. For this reason, and convinced of the civic commitment that motivates student organizations, the Council of Rectors calls upon students to promote and ensure that tomorrow's demonstration is particularly respectful of this circumstance and of those who will be expressing their gratitude to the man who helped restore public freedoms to our finest civic traditions.
In short, the Council of Rectors hopes that the CONFECH mobilization will be successful and that it will take place in an atmosphere of unity and peace.
