The event, planned in collaboration with French organizations, will establish the 'ULagos Inclusion Recognition' award, which celebrates and values the work done to promote the inclusion of people with disabilities. This year's theme is "Body and Disability: Tensions and Convergences.".

The 'II Franco-Latin American Congress/Colloquium on Disability Research' will be held on December 9, 10, and 11. The event is organized by the University of Los Lagos in conjunction with the Disability and Society Program of the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS, France) and the National Institute for Training and Research in Education for Young People with Disabilities and Adapted Teaching (INS HEA, France). The event is sponsored by CONICYT, the National Disability Service (SENADIS), and the Senate Extension Center.

The Congress/Colloquium, whose first version was held in 2014 at the University of Paris V Rene Descartes (France), attempts to promote the development of research and the dissemination of knowledge in the field of disability, as well as to encourage the activation of networks and the exchange between French and Latin American researchers to enrich research perspectives and consider international collaboration.

“For the first time, world-class specialists are meeting in Chile to reflect on disability, its historical exclusion, and the progress made in inclusion strategies and the strengthening of people's rights. Given that 151% of the world's population lives with a disability, and this number is steadily increasing, the issues we are addressing at this meeting should be priorities on national agendas,” says Débora Gálvez, General Coordinator of the meeting.

In its second edition, the Congress/Colloquium invites reflection on "Body and Disability: Tensions and Convergences." 'Disability' reveals how the symbolic inscription of the social is formed on bodies, and how this leads to social inequality. People with disabilities share conditions of existence marked by marginalization and exclusion stemming from the imputation of 'deficiency.' Thus, disability becomes a privileged object of study for observing how arbitrary and historical relationships are naturalized in and through the body. It is here that theoretical and conceptual approaches to disability from the humanities and social sciences have much to contribute.

More than one hundred papers were received, with 107 being accepted, which were evaluated by an international scientific committee.

The academic event also provides an opportune moment to launch the 'ULagos Inclusion Recognition'. This award recognizes and celebrates organizations and individuals working towards the inclusion of people with disabilities. There will be three categories: Contribution to the field of communication and dissemination of inclusion; Private sector initiatives for inclusion; and Outstanding Person of the Year.
