Rector Valle, from the University of Valparaíso, will head the new executive committee of the Council of Rectors, which also includes the rectors of the Catholic University of Maule, University of Chile, University of Concepción, University of Playa Ancha, Federico Santa María University and the University of La Frontera.
Rector Juan Manuel Zolezzi was recognized by his peers for the work he did during his tenure, between November 2011 and March 2015.
The rector of the University of Valparaíso, Aldo Valle, assumed today as the new executive vice president of the Council of Rectors (Cruch) for a period of two years, in a transfer ceremony held during the monthly session of the organization, carried out at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile.
At the ceremony, which was attended by the Head of the Higher Education Division (Divesup) of the Ministry of Education, Francisco Martínez, a “Handover and Receipt of Office of Executive Vice President” was signed, which states that “Dr. Juan Manuel Zolezzi, Rector of the University of Santiago de Chile, formally hands over the position of Executive Vice President of the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities to the Rector of the University of Valparaíso, Mr. Aldo Valle Acevedo, who assumes the position as of today, March 26, 2015, as do the other elected authorities of this Council.”.
On that occasion, Rector Valle noted that “this year we have a great challenge, because the Council of Rectors, due to its history, its mission, and the fruitful relationship it has had with Chilean society for more than 60 years, is responsible for being at the forefront of higher education reform.”.
Rector Valle emphasized the commitment of the CRUCH to contribute to higher education in Chile reaching better levels of quality and "correcting what we have unfortunately not done well, because many young people and many families expect higher education to be an opportunity that effectively allows individuals and the country as a whole to achieve greater development, more equity, more integration and social cohesion, because a modern society is characterized primarily by the fact that it is governed by superior principles of equity and equal opportunities.
New Executive Committee
The Council's new executive committee will have seven members and will be headed by the executive vice president, Rector Aldo Valle, and, as alternate vice president, the rector of the Catholic University of Maule, Diego Durán. The committee will also include the presidents of the Consortium of State Universities (CUECh), Rector of the University of Chile, Ennio Vivaldi; of the G9 Network, Rector of the University of Concepción, Sergio Lavanchy; and of the Association of Regional Universities (AUR), Rector of the University of Playa Ancha, Patricio Sanhueza. Two additional rectors will join the executive committee: Darcy Fuenzalida of the Federico Santa María Technical University and Sergio Bravo of the University of La Frontera.
Recognition to rector Zolezzi
At the handover ceremony, the university rectors highlighted the work of outgoing Vice President Juan Manuel Zolezzi, noting that during his tenure, significant ideas for the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities (CRUCH) were consolidated and that the universities were very well represented in the public arena. It is worth recalling that during his term—between November 2011 and March 2015—the Grade Ranking was incorporated as a new selection factor, the Unified Admission System was created, and the recommendations of the Pearson Report to improve the University Selection Test (PSU) began to be implemented, among other important milestones.
