The meeting brought together 37 researchers from nine universities across the country. The participants discussed the present and future of research in Chile.

The first Science, Technology, and Innovation Colloquium of the Council of Rectors was a great success, held last Friday, July 19th. It brought together 37 young researchers from universities in the Metropolitan and Fifth Regions. The vice-rectors of research from these institutions also attended.

The Rector of the Catholic University, Ignacio Sánchez, welcomed the group of researchers who arrived at the UC extension center. In his speech, he noted that “In a year of crucial political decisions for the country, the Science and Technology Commission of the Council of Rectors wanted to bring together the community of young scientists and researchers to participate in a dialogue that will allow them to present proposals to help develop science and technology policies for the future of Chile over the next thirty years.”

Following this presentation, the participants divided into groups to discuss topics such as the projection of science and technology in Chile for the next decade or the changes needed for the country to advance in this area.

The meeting also included a round table discussion with Doctors Cecilia Hidalgo, Jorge Allende, Ramón Latorre and Bernabé Santelices, who shared their experiences with the young researchers.

Among the participants' comments, concern stood out regarding what they described as minimal progress in science and technology, along with a willingness to contribute to any necessary changes. For the group, the central question is where we aspire to be if, as a country, we invest in this area. The colloquium was highly valued as a forum for discussing how society shares the value of science and the role of young academics in this challenge.

The next colloquiums will be held in Antofagasta and Concepción during the month of August.
