Over the past week, we have observed the debate surrounding the possible elimination of the National Medical Exam, a test that certifies the level of theoretical knowledge of the country's medical graduates. The argument is that accreditation alone is sufficient to certify that students from an educational institution are prepared to enter the workforce. We believe this is a mistake, especially given that we see universities of dubious quality offering medical degrees successfully obtaining accreditation.

The exam has been a collaborative effort spanning years between government authorities and the universities of the Council of Rectors. While we acknowledge that it requires changes to prevent leaks, we believe that eliminating it would undermine quality assurance in a profession so sensitive and strategic for the country.
