Disseminating and promoting the progress that each institution of the Council of Rectors has achieved in this area and in curricular innovation were the objectives of the meeting, held between August 31 and September 2 in Pucón and organized by the Universities of La Frontera and Católica de Temuco.
The academic conference, led by the rector of the University of La Frontera, Sergio Bravo Escobar, was attended by experts in the Transferable Credit System (SCT) from the 25 institutions of the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities (CRUCH), academics and directors of teaching from other higher education institutions in the country, representatives of the Ministry of Education (mineduc) and experts from four foreign institutions (Ireland, Canada, the United States and the Netherlands), who shared the experiences of their countries in this matter.
In this context, the seminar is the culmination of a process in which each university achieved milestones in curricular innovation and academic credits, which were presented during the event. Now, representatives from the Ministry of Education indicated, the challenge is to find strategies that allow for the practical implementation of the SCT (Student Credit Transfer System).
“The goal is to achieve the adoption of a common SCT (Student Credit System) across all universities and, eventually, all national higher education institutions, as it operates in developed countries, certifying the learning and skills acquired by students and enhancing mobility,” said Ricardo Reich, head of the Institutional Financing Department of the Higher Education Division (DIVESUP) of the Ministry of Education.
Tatiana Sánchez, an academic at the Catholic University of Temuco and organizer of the event, stated that the seminar's expectations were fully met, both in terms of attendance, bringing together more than 100 people, and the progress shown by the 25 universities on a topic necessary to continue improving the quality and relevance of the tertiary education currently offered.
The Academic Vice-Rectors of the CRUCH universities also met within the framework of the international seminar under the presidency of Rector Sergio Bravo, who made special reference to the need for a complete academic redesign of higher education, addressing the definition of a qualifications framework, training by cycles, greater flexibility in study programs and the articulation between technical and university training.
The vice-rectors, along with gathering these fundamental proposals, made progress in defining a strategy for the implementation of the SCT in all the universities of the Council of Rectors, the situation of access in 2011 to the pedagogy careers and the articulation between undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
