The meeting addressed topics related to the 2011 Budget and the reconstruction of university heritage.

The University of Santiago hosted the fourth meeting that the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities (CRUCH) has held with parliamentarians in less than 30 days, with a clear and forceful objective: the reconstruction of university assets and the assurance of student aid and other items in the 2011 budget.

The legislative agenda has been constant, beginning at the end of July with a meeting with the senators of the Finance and Housing committees and continuing with the Joint Budget Subcommittee No. 4 of the Chamber of Deputies.

«The universities of the Council of Rectors represent an immensely valuable asset for society, and it is our commitment to work continuously to establish an agenda that addresses the issues we have been raising since the beginning of this year. Since February 27, our efforts have been evident: we have revived our universities with an enormous economic and human effort, facing a debt of billions of pesos that, if it continues, will inevitably lead us to a greater financial crisis,» stated the Rector of the University of Santiago, Juan Zolezzi.
«Today more than ever, we must establish a national commitment to higher education. In recent days, in light of the Casen Survey, there has been discussion about the wide inequality in access to higher education, and the universities of the Council of Rectors play a fundamental role in overcoming this gap. We cannot ignore this inequality when considering a long-term commitment to public higher education in this country,» he concluded.
The meeting was attended by members of parliament Pepe Auth (PPD), Carlos Montes (PS), Pablo Lorenzini (DC), and Alberto Robles (PRSD). The Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities (CRUCH) was represented by the rector of the University of Santiago, Juan Zolezzi, the rector of the University of Valparaíso, Aldo Valle, and the rector of the University of Talca, Álvaro Rojas.
